Instructional Design:
Assessments are a critical piece of the design process. I spent time in module 3 working on different types of assessments. I used form 6.2 to first identify the types of assessments I would use with each objective. Then, in form 6.3 (see below), I described more specifically assessments and activities for each objective. Using the ideas of Absorb, Do, and Connect, I was able to align the activities throughout the course with the objectives being assessed. This form is a critical piece of the design process.
Since all students learn differently, I made sure to include a variety of different types of activities and assessments. The assessments used include discussions, quizzes (both teacher and student created), practice problems, and student created videos. Each activity allows students to demonstrate their understanding of the materials. The practice problems and teacher created quizzes allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the specific process being taught. The student created quizzes allow students the opportunity to further develop their own understanding by creating the quiz and at the same time demonstrating their understanding of the process by taking the quiz of others. The discussions and student created videos give students an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to do and talk about the material being covered. It provides an opportunity to practice and demonstrate a deeper level of understanding.
In addition to the variety of assessments allowing for different learning styles, it also allows an opportunity to assess each of the objectives in the most appropriate manner. The quizzes and practice problems allow assessment of the step by step skills. The discussions and videos allow for assessment of more cognitive understanding..

The following is an example of just one of the assessments in this course. It is designed as a "Do" activity. Students may use any of their resources to complete the quiz. It must be submitted electronically into eBackpack within 24 hours of being assigned.
