Assessment in E-Learning: Artifacts
"Let's Go to the Movies" Icebreaker
I had a hard time at first thinking of just one movie. My family members are not big movie watchers, so we have no movie traditions. The movie that I settled on is “Ruby”. This movie was released in 1993. It is set in Illinois and Indiana. It is about a Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger. He has a dream to play football at the University of Notre Dame. He didn’t have the best grades in high school and isn’t the biggest guy, so this is an unlikely dream. In the end, he perseveres and makes it into one football game his senior year at Notre Dame.
I selected this movie because it is all about determination and not giving up. I have experienced many challenges in my life and I choose to never give up; from returning to math after an 18 year break to competing in my first triathlon to running a 10 mile race with a bulging disc. This movie reminds me of my own strength and courage. These are traits that I learned from my parents as they have encountered many challenges. It is also an important quality as a teacher and a student. |
Annotation:This was the icebreaker used to start out the class. I really enjoyed this. It started class on a positive note. It gave everyone an opportunity to share what they wanted. This was a great opportunity to get to know other classmates.

Reusable Learning Object (RLO) Survey
This survey gave me an opportunity to compare my teaching practices with those of teacher-centered and student-centered classrooms. I agreed with my results. The majority of the things I selected fell under learner-centered. I had selected a few under teacher-centered, but that did not surprise me. As a math teacher, I at times need to rely on direct teaching, which is going to fall under the teacher-centered category. I try to have a very learner-centered classroom and that showed in the results.

Annotation:This was an interactive survey that allowed me to reflect on my own teaching practices. I compared teacher-centered versus student-centered courses and then compared that with my own practices.
